BAMS

March 16, 2010 by

British Art Medal Society http://www.bams.org.uk/

This society holds competitions for medal making (largely metal casting I would suppose), but to my untrained eye it also screams out ‘cast and cold worked’ glass !!. I believe that there may be some discussion to incorporate certain colleges which have glass departments in the next student competition ! Watch this space !!!

Here is some information I have cut and pasted off their website, hope they do not mind !

Qoute BAMS ……………. ‘One of the aims of BAMS is to encourage an appreciation of the art of the medal through a variety of educational projects. Various members of the society have utilised techniques to create workshops that are suitable for a wide age range. These have been held in many schools, junior and senior, and in venues such as the British Museum and National Gallery. More advanced work has been undertaken for colleges such as the Royal College of Art and a major initiative, the Student Medal Project, was established in 1993.

Holly Milligan - Ragged MemoriesThe Student Medal Project encourages and promotes the art of making medals throughout art colleges in the United Kingdom. Each year over one hundred student medals, from as many as fifteen art colleges, are submitted for judging for prizes and selection for exhibition. The Royal Mint and the Worshipful Company of Founders are among the institutions that support the project, and the British Museum sometimes purchases particularly meritorious student medals.

BAMS on display around Cardiff this Spring! 2010-03-15 14:11:55
Explore the world of contemporary art medals at the following locations:

Visit National Museum Cardiff between 13th April and 23rd May to view the entries and winners of this year’s BAMS Student Medal Competition, as well as recent medals issued by the society.

Visit St. David’s Hall (level 3 Foyer) between 1st and 30th April where medals commissioned in recent years by BAMS will be on display and can be purchased.

Visit Craft in the Bay between 1st April and 31st May for a display of more BAMS medals including a selection for sale.

Visit The Washington Gallery in Penarth between 13th April and 23rd May where work by 5 leading medallic artists will be on show………’  unquote

Glass Exhibition at Swansea National Waterfront Museum

February 27, 2010 by

LOVE SWANSEA GLASS

Love is in the air at Swansea Metropolitan University as the Welsh School of Architectural Glass celebrates Saint Valentine’s Day with the opening of an exhibition called Love Swansea Glass.

Love Swansea Glass, located within the city’s National Waterfront Museum for four weeks from Feb 14th, is the first of many exhibitions throughout 2010 in celebration of the School’s seventy-fifth anniversary.

Despite Swansea’s global reputation for glass art, the School has always remained community-based and this new exhibition highlights its relationship with the local community. Love Swansea Glass calls upon the local and national glass community to share their thoughts and memories of Swansea, especially at this romantic time of year.

A call was sent out inviting glass artists to design and fabricate a glass panel on the theme of ‘A Valentine for Swansea’. The event was advertised with the cooperation of the Contemporary Glass Society, British Society of Master Glass Painters, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, National Waterfront Museum, Swansea Met’s Alumni and current students.

Prior to the exhibition, a series of workshops were organised involving the local community, giving them an opportunity to experience the allure of glass by designing and sand blasting a heart that has become a major feature within the show. Schools who have taken part include Cefn Saeson, Brynhyfryd School, Clwyd Primary, Olchfa School and Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr,

Exhibition organiser and University Programme Director, Lisa Burkl said: “The response has been quite unexpected, with panels coming from around the country. The exhibition demonstrates how artists and the community have participated with the School in helping us celebrate our seventy-fifth anniversary and offers the viewer an insight into the tightly bonded family of Swansea Glass.”

In 2010, the Welsh School of Architectural Glass at Swansea Met celebrates its 75th anniversary. The School is unique in that it is the only purely architecturally based glass course in the world. Many of today’s leading practitioners have learnt their design and craft skills in Swansea.

Bullseye Lecture Tour Comes to Swansea Again

September 28, 2009 by

Inspire & Inform – UK Lecture Tour #2 – 2009 The artists tour in pairs, grouped by complementary working methods. In each six-hour day lecture programme, the artists discuss their individual art works, backgrounds, inspirations, and tecniques. This second tour for 2009 features Catharine Newell and April Surgent, US based artists who are recognised for figurative work in kilnformed glass. Newell ‘paints’ with glass frits and powders, and Surgent cameo-engraves fused glass layers. http://bullseyeglass.co.uk/ STUDENT TICKET – SWANSEA – 30th October 2009 – £20

Inspire & Inform 2009

As part of it’s ongoing support for educational programmes in kilnformed glass, Bullseye Glass Ltd. has organised a series of lectures by international artists to be linked to educational institutions throughout the UK.The four artists featuring in the 2009 ‘Inspire & Inform’ Lecture Tour will discuss their work, including conceptual and technical issues.

They will tour in pairs, grouped by complementary working methods, with each pair appearing at each of the venues. The series starts at the end of January / early February 2009 and concludes in early October 2009.

“These tours are going to be a terrific way for students, practicing artists, and glass aficionados anywhere in the UK to hear distinguished artists speak about their work and working methods,” said Karen Davies, Manager of Bullseye Glass Ltd., based in Caithness, Scotland.

Entry to the lectures will be by ticket only, and audience size will be limited to a maximum of 150 per venue. Pre-booking is essential, and early booking is recommended to ensure that you don’t miss this fantastic opportunity.

After the success of their first tour, by Richard Whiteley, Head of the prestigious Glass Workshop at the School of Art, Australian National University, and Heike Brachlow, a graduate of London’s Royal College of Art who is presently conducting PhD research into colour in glass, we are now getting ready for our second tour of the year.

Catharine Newell and April Surgent will be following up with our second tour series, which will be held at eight separate venues across the UK, spanning the country from Edinburgh to Falmouth – this should help most of you to be able to reach one of our lectures, within no more than a couple of hours travel from most points.

ARCHITECTURAL GLASS CENTRE

SWANSEA METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY

ALEXANDRA ROAD

SWANSEA SA1 5DU

  The Architectural Glass Centre (AGC) is the commercial operation of Swansea Metropolitan University’s renowned School of Architectural Glass.

 PROJECT BRIEF

The brief is to design a wall mounted ’sculptural’ glass piece to be sited internally adjacent to the main entrance to the  new Welsh Assembly Government office building currently under construction in Aberystwyth. (See Artist’s impression on website for Welsh Assembly Government/Aberystwyth Office http://wales.gov.uk/about/strategy/locstrat/officelocations/aberoffice/?lang=en ). While there is no specific theme or colour scheme for this project, your design should reflect the purpose of the building and relate to those who use it (e.g. environment, countryside, water, topography, etc.). The following departments will be based in the offices.

Main departments;

  • Rural Affairs and Heritage;
  • Economy and Transport;

Other departments;

  • Environment, Sustainability and Housing;
  • Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills;
  • Health and Social Services; Human Resources;
  • Corporate Information and Services Department;
  • Forestry Commission; &
  • Countryside Council of Wales.

 You will need to consider how the piece is to be framed/mounted, its practicality (cleaning, maintenance, etc.) and the health and safety implications. If mounted on the wall the maximum weight of the piece, including the frame, cannot exceed 50kg. If the frame can be designed to rest on the floor but be secured to the wall then a maximum weight of 80kg is permissible. The atrium in which the piece is to be fixed has very strong natural light. How your piece needs to be illuminated should be considered. The wall behind the piece will be painted in a light neutral colour to allow maximum reflection of natural/artificial light.

 The maximum size of the finished piece, including frame, cannot exceed a width of 1.2m and height of 2.3m. The framing material needs to compliment other fixtures and finishes in the building (slate flooring, oak furniture/fittings, and stainless steel).

 The budget for this project is £12,000 – £14,000 to include design fees, fabrication, frame and fitting. The project is being managed by the Architectural Glass Centre who will contract with the successful designer.

 A decision on the design will be made by mid/late June and the successful designer informed. The finished piece will need to be installed by late September 2009.

 Should you require any further information please contact Alun Adams on 01792 481084 or by email at alun.adams@smu.ac.uk On no account should you contact the Welsh Assembly or the contractors involved in the construction of the building. At this stage this is a building site and there is no access.

 Coloured, scale designs together with a short statement (including details of framing/fitting) should be submitted to Alun Adams, Architectural Glass Centre, Swansea Metropolitan University, Alexandra Road, Swansea SA1 5DU,to arrive no later than 10.00am Wednesday 10th June 2009. Any received after the deadline will not be considered. Your name and contact details should not be visible on the design but should be placed in a sealed envelope securely attached to the rear of the design.

The Graduates of 2009, from the Welsh School of Architectural Glass, Swansea Metropolitan University, are showcasing an exciting and innovative exhibition of contemporary and traditional glass.

The exhibition affords the opportunity to experience the dynamic work of a new generation of diverse architectural glass artists and features an eclectic mix of exhibits, highlighting both two and three dimensional concepts. Contemporary work inspired by themes that range from lenticular technology, industry and community projects juxtaposed with the more traditional language of stained glass.

The Graduates invite you to share their artistic expression and ‘New Vision’ for Architectural Glass.

 I’ve asked for some photographs so will post these as soon as they arrive.D
