THE search is on to find an artist to follow in the footsteps of Philippa Lawrence, Sally Moore and Walter Keeler as Welsh Artist Of The Year 2009.
Now in its ninth year, the competition which is organised by Cardiff’s St David’s Hall, is looking for the most innovative and talented Welsh-born artists working throughout the UK and artists currently working or living in Wales.
A total prize of £2,000 is on offer for the winners and will be split across seven different categories: painting, sculpture, photography, applied arts, printmaking, drawing and student.
Cardiff-based artists Philippa Lawrence, who won last year with her entry Bound Bonsai (a Bonsai tree wrapped in gold thread), will return this year to join the panel of judges.
Since winning last year Philippa, who is a lecturer in contemporary textiles at UWIC
and has studios at Chapter, Cardiff, has created another wrapped Bonsai tree and is in talks with a gallery to create a wrapped tree for a National Trust property in Herefordshire this summer.
“Winning Welsh Artist of the Year has meant my work had been seen by a wider art going audience. It also gave me the opportunity to meet up with world-famous sculptor Richard Long, whose work I admire,” she said.
The winner will be announced in a ceremony at St David’s Hall, Cardiff, on Sunday, May 24th. The winning entries will be exhibited alongside 100 others making the shortlist in the Welsh Artist of the Year Exhibition, which runs from May 24 to July 25.
Other judges joining Philippa to select this year’s shortlist include world-renowned Welsh artists Shani Rhys James and Terry Setch, Jenny Spencer Davies, curator at the Glyn Vivian Gallery, Swansea, Cardiff silversmith and Eisteddfod Craft Prize winner, Suzy Horan, and ceramicists Lowri Davies and Ingrid Murphy.
Exhibition curator Ruth Cayford said: “The competition has grown every year and is gaining a strong reputation in the art community in Wales and throughout the UK.
“Last year we had 500 entries and this year we’re expecting even more.”
“We hope to get a good cross section of quality Welsh art, ranging from avant-garde to more traditional.”
